Sam Karlen's Projects
Sam Karlen
Hello, and welcome to my portfolio! I've been developing my skills as a game designer since around 2018, working on a few projects out of class during high school and my career at High Point University. As a recent graduate of High Point University I've found myself working to further develop my skills in Unreal 5 and further my understanding of tools like Blender. On this site you will find a selection of the previous projects I've worked on and the work I've done for those projects.
My Work Showcase
Here is a selection of some of the work I'm more proud of and provides a representation of my skills as a game designer. Throughout my different projects I have taken roles programming, modeling, designing UI elements, and working with engines like Unreal 4, 5, and Unity. So far I've worked on 3 major projects, which can all be downloaded from itch.io and can be played on PC. While not all finished, a selection of screenshots below show some of these games and the Projects link will take you to my portfolio.

Terror on the Tides
Terror on the Tides is a puzzle game that puts you aboard the deck of a pirate ship with nothing but questions, will you solve them?
Terror on the Tides is a puzzle game based on a pirate ship developed over a 4 month window.
Unreal 5
PC
4 person development team
~10 minutes in length
Roles: I worked as a 3D modeler, a blueprint editor, and a UI editor during this project.
As a developer I found that it was fairly difficult to make my puzzle both intuitive and still enjoyable to play out, which is how I came up with the idea of adding a riddle. When I first started working on the key puzzle on the deck of the ship, the key was just placed elsewhere on the deck with no real indication of where it was or what it did. This changed after a few playtesters suggested I add a readable item that explained to some degree what to do with the key.
The image on the left was the original location, which was difficult for players to both physically get to and locate when the key model was added. I changed this by adding a couple of visual elements to both highlight the key and explain where it was, as well as making it more easily accessable to the player. I added the note for the player to read and the key has a light shining on it that casts a shadow over the mast for the player to see.
